The meal plan options offered on college campuses to students are often limited and unreasonably expensive, especially so for first-year students. At Emory University, the only plan first-year students can opt to choose is a $5,000 a year, unlimited meal plan. More cost-effective plans are open to sophomores and juniors, so freshmen are typically the only ones purchasing this meal plan. Even sophomores have their meal plan options limited such that they are still required to purchase of all-you-can-eat dining hall swipes, many of which go unused by the end of each semester. The fact that almost all sophomores transition from the freshmen, unlimited meal plan to one that is less expensive is indication that first-year students don't find the unlimited plan in their best interest.
