WHY DO I CARE?
You may be wondering why I still care about the dining needs of college freshmen. After all, I’m a sophomore now! I have a different meal plan that doesn’t limit me to eating at the dining hall for all my meals. Still, I once was a frustrated freshmen myself who frequently wound up upset about the limited dining options on campus. This, in addition to the burdens of schoolwork and adjusting to life at Emory, led me to develop poor eating habits that I'm still working on improving today.
As an aspiring healthcare professional, I care about deeply about nutrition and am always interested in efforts to combat the obesity trend so prevalent in the US today. The unhealthy habits that many students unfortunately adopt in college can stick with them for several years to come, which only worsens the epidemic our country faces. Moreover, weight gain during college can lead students to develop body image issues. This, in turn, cane take a serious toll on the academic and personal lives of college students around the nation.
I want to ensure that this is prevented. College should live up to it's title as the "best four years of our lives", and campus dining interventions can help make that happen.
My interests have led me to take on the position of Nutrition/Dietary Needs Chair on the Food Advisory Committee at Emory. I work with dining administrators at Emory to ensure that the special dietary needs of students are being met at all on-campus dining locations.
